ORGANIC Tomatillo seeds Purple
ORGANIC Tomatillo seeds Purple
Seeds per pack; Approx. 5
Sow; January - March
Harvest; Aug - Sept
The Tomatillo is like a tomato but in a papery lantern similar to that of a Cape Gooseberry and has a wonderful tangy, tart flavour.
They are native to Mexico and a staple of Mexican cuisine where they are eaten raw or grilled and used to make salsas.
They need a warm, sunny spot, best grown under cover.
Tomatillos are extremely high-yielding but need at least 2 plants for effective pollination.
Tomatillo Purple is less suited to the UK to Verde as it needs a lot of sunshine in order to ripen to it's purple colour.
Sow seeds in a heated propagator or warm windowsill from January - March in a tray of compost at approximately 1cm deep.
Once the plants have grown their first true leaves they can be potted on into individual pots and placed in a warm, sunny location(preferably a south facing window or conservatory).
Plant out about 1m apart in a greenhouse/polytunnel or outside after the last frost and when the temperature has warmed a bit.
When your Tomatillos get to around 30cm tall they will begin to flop on their sides and the central stem will make contact with the soil to send out loads of lateral roots, followed by fruit-producing shoots that will produce at least 4 or 5 times more fruit on them.
They are ready to harvest when they start to split their lantern-like casings but are still green.
Keep plants well fed and watered.
