Common chicory, Cichorium intybus, is a somewhat woody, perennial herbaceous plant of the dandelion family Asteraceae, usually with bright blue flowers, rarely white or pink. Many varieties are cultivated for salad leaves, chicons (blanched buds), or roots (var. sativum), which are baked, ground, and used as a coffee substitute and food additive.
There are three main varieties of Chicory; Witlof, Radicchio and Sugarloaf.
Palla Rossa is a popular, traditional radicchio type. The leaves are a deep red and somewhat cabbage like. It produces reliable crops of compact, well shaped heads, that can be grown as baby-leaf for salads and as endives.
Sow from April - July 1cm deep into well-prepared soil. Thin to 20cm between plants as they grow.
Harvest individual leaves or cut the whole plant when the heart has filled out.
